Coaching Model
Coaches support teachers in learning classroom behavior management strategies and in delivering each SEL module of the curriculum. Pre-K TIPS coaches conduct classroom observations and meet with teachers for consultation sessions on a weekly basis. Aligned with evidence-based early childhood consultation models, coaches also conduct a basic functional behavioral assessment (FBA) and consult with teachers on the implementation of a behavior intervention plan (BIP) for referred children, when applicable.
Initial classroom observations are conducted to gather data about common barriers faced in implementation (e.g., concerns about the intervention and understanding of evidence-based practice). Feedback on teacher performance across these various areas is provided to the teacher in an easy-to-read format. This feedback is designed to help teachers understand if they are at risk relative to their peers with regard to SEL and classroom behavior management practices (e.g., posting rules).
Using provided baseline data, teachers are then encouraged by their coach to choose areas they would like to target during the intervention phase. Pre-K TIPS coaches set goals with the teacher to address areas of risk across both SEL and classroom behavior management modules and support them in achieving these goals to improve the overall implementation of the overall Pre-K TIPS program.
